We’ve spoken at length about the ubiquity of hospitality before. It’s where life happens - far beyond your initial thoughts of restaurants and hotels.
Even when we're not actively seeking a dining experience, the sector has a way of touching our daily routines, influencing our culture, communities, and economy.
Hospitality is found in our everyday…
It’s the breakfast club at your children’s school.
The hot lunch that unites colleagues in a factory canteen.
The stadium burger that becomes part of the matchday ritual.
The care home dining room, where meal times become integral to someone’s daily routine.
It’s the weddings, wakes, festivals, conferences, food halls, pop-ups, and food courts after a busy day out shopping.
These moments add up.
And they touch every generation, every income bracket, every postcode. Hospitality is about food, drink, and experiences, and that takes many different forms…
The many faces of the hospitality sector
As an ever-evolving sector, we experience hospitality in so many different formats, especially today. This allows operators to cater to a larger variety of audiences and expectations. Let’s look at some of the most common today, and their value in society:
Coffee shops and cafes
From quaint local coffee shops to the well-known national brands on every corner of the UK’s high streets, these venues cater to a wide array of tastes and preferences. Serving as a space to set up and work remotely, meet old friends over a hot chocolate or coffee, and a chat that leads to a new business relationship, coffee shops can be seen as the lifeblood of connections and community.
Group restaurants
These can offer communal dining experiences and reflect evolving consumer desires for variety and social engagement. Catering to high volumes, these operators require efficient operations and equipment that helps them do the job well and fast. Often the ‘go-to’ place for a group of friends or family,
Food trucks and pop-ups
Mobile eateries are allowing us to experience culinary innovation first-hand, often leading trends in street food culture. These types of venues are popular with families of young children since they are more casual, and usually outdoors.
Festivals and stadium catering
An opportunity to feed the masses during events, hospitality can be integral to the entertainment experience. Strawberries and cream at Wimbledon, anyone?
Catering to life's milestones
Weddings, anniversaries, funerals, birthdays, and religious celebrations that often revolve around shared meals, highlight the role of hospitality in marking significant life events.
Schools and universities
Millions of students rely on catered meals every day, and with growing concern over nutrition and childhood health, parents are increasingly interested in quality. There is a rising demand for menus that offer more than the usual beige, processed basics.
Care and community settings
Food is more than fuel in care homes, day centres and community kitchens; it’s often the highlight of someone’s day. Dining here has to be a combination of nutritious, accessible, and comforting.
Events
Hospitality, as we know, is often a celebration of life's biggest occasions, such as weddings, funerals, baby showers, and religious celebrations. Food and drink can provide an emotional anchor.
For suppliers, operators, and service providers alike, this diversity brings opportunity - but also complexity. All these busy, functional kitchens need equipment they can rely on to run smoothly and hygienically. At Classeq we support hospitality in whatever it’s form. If you’re preparing and serving food and drinks, you’ll have items to wash. Our range of Undercounter and Pass Through warewashers play a small, but essential part in keeping service running.
This is just a snapshot of the many different hospitality operations that touch our lives, both in the big moments and the small. The industry is continuously adapting and evolving, how our lives be impacted in the future?
Which leads us nicely into our next section…
The impact of societal trends on hospitality
Hospitality shapes our everyday lives. But the opposite is also true. As we change the way we experience the sector, shifting our behaviours and expectations, the sector in turn has to adapt. The way in which we experience the sector, shift our behaviours and expectations, can influence the way the sector operators. Here are just a few societal shifts and trends that seem to stand out at the moment:
1. Prioritising experiences
Yes, the next few months are going to be some of the most uncertain we’ve seen in a while. This has of course forced many consumers to tighten their belts. But interestingly, they’re still prioritising memorable experiences. Last year, The Guardian reported a Summer surge in event bookings across the UK, driven by social gatherings, company events, and weddings, which reflects a societal shift towards in-person interactions and experiences.
That could mean fewer nights and days out, but more bookings for special occasions. Operators are responding with creativity, flexible pricing models, and new formats like supper clubs, food truck residencies, and event dining.
2. Sustainability:
It’s no longer niche to care about where your ingredients come from, how much water your kitchen uses, or whether your detergent is biodegradable. It’s becoming more common for consumers to favour brands and establishments that make local sourcing, waste reduction, and eco-friendly practices a priority. Plus, according to the Grocer, nearly half of consumers now express a desire for more British goods, which is likely to set the trend for restaurants and catering (and beyond) .
3. Technological integration:
The humble QR code, app-based ordering, and automated services have helped operators enhance convenience and efficiency. And these clearly weren’t just short-term solutions to pandemic-based problems, they're here to stay.
This is part of the reason behind developing the Classeq app; we knew how important technology was in helping to support operational excellence behind the scenes too.
4. Health-conscious millennial parents:
29% of millennials with children under 12 said that they were seeking healthier options for their children when eating out. As stated above, this marks a growing demand for more nutritious options on the kids' menu that go beyond the traditional ‘beige’ offerings. But with ‘the more discerning eaters’ still very much amongst the younger population, it will be interesting to see how operators adapt and cater for both ends of the spectrum.
Hospitality is more than a luxury - it's a cornerstone of daily life. Hospitality promotes community, supports the economy, and adapts to our evolving needs and values. Recognising the dedication of hospitality professionals is essential, as their efforts enrich our experiences, from the ordinary to the extraordinary.
At Classeq, we support the hospitality sector's growth and resilience. While we’re not operators, we try our very best to understand the complexities of the sector and introduce some simplicity when we can.
As we’ve highlighted, there are so many types within our industry and so many expectations. It’s for those reasons that we embrace the Power of Simple in our machines. To help and support the industry in keeping service flowing.
And it’s why, at Classeq, we also focus attention on those everyday environments that don’t always get the limelight but are just as vital.
We’re always keen to learn from the hospitality industry. Please feel free to comment and share your insights and stories with us!
